By combining these energy sources, optical energy, which is absorbed by epidermal melanin, can be lowered to preheat target tissue with reduced risk of epidermal damage. RF energy is driven to the deeper preheated structures, producing uniform heat at a controlled depth in the dermal layers, without injury to the epidermis (3-5). Both energies create a thermal wound at the targeted area for treatment that results in increased thickness in the epidermis and more compact collagen bundles throughout the dermis (3-5).
